Amritsar’s Silver Temple- Epitome of Indian Art and Culture

Amritsar is famous for Golden Temple, which is a religious place for Sikhs. However, do you know that there is a Silver Temple in Amritsar as well, which symbolizes Indian art and culture. Very few are aware that Amritsar also celebrates Langoorwala Mela in Durgiana Temple, which is similar to Golden Temple. It lies at the few minutes drive from the Harmandir Sahib.

Durgiana Temple is also known as Laxmi Narayan Temple or Sheetla Mata Mandir is referred to as the Silver Temple that owes to the silver doors to its Sanctum. The building echoes the copies of Golden Temple with similar canopies and central dome, which are also surrounded by smaller domes as well. The segments and domes of the outer walls are covered with more than 40 Kgs of Gold. The walkway on the other side of the temple leads to the major Sanctum of Goddess Durga. The guard who stands at the entrance is an amazing marble idol of Hanuman. On the main door, you will see Young Krishna calming the serpent Kaaliya.

In the Silver Temple, Amritsar, which depicts Indian art and Culture, you will find shrines, which are dedicated to Mahalakshmi and Lord Naryana. The Lakshmi Narayan Sanctum is connected to the main temple through a two lane causeway. And this is the reason, most of the times, it is also referred to as Lakshmi Narayan Temple. The statue of Lord Shiva in the meditative pose emerges from the placid waters of the tank with colorful fishes swimming in it. You can also find marble statues of other dieties including, Veda Vyas and Goswami Tulsidas. Langoorwala Mela come near Navarastras, in which Bada Hanuman Mandir, which lies within the temple complex becomes the center of attraction of the Langoorwala Mela.
